There may still be snow on the ground, but we’re already getting ready for warmer weather and the return—and expansion!—of TIFF in the Park, our free outdoor summer screening series.
TIFF in the Park started in David Pecaut Square during the summer of 2010 as a teaser for what was soon to come with the opening of TIFF Bell Lightbox nearby. Five years later, TIFF in the Park continues to be a highlight of Toronto summers, drawing in hundreds of people every Wednesday for a night of movie magic under the stars and lights of the city.
“It’s an opportunity for people living in a tower city to get out of their living rooms,” says David Carey, Director of Government & Foundation Relations and TIFF in the Park enthusiast, “There’s something special about watching a film outdoors with strangers; not sitting in a black box, but having a communal experience outside.”
Each year brings a new series of films: musicals, screwball comedies, classic romance and this past summer, Backstage Pass. It’s an experience TIFF was eager to share with as many people in the city as possible. In recent years, TIFF has hosted pop-up film screenings in parks around the Greater Toronto Area, such as Dentonia Park, Regent Park, Dorset Park, Queensway Park, and Dallington Park, among others.
This year, TIFF is taking film programming out into the city with a group of community partners. In collaboration with Park People, we’re excited to launch TIFF in Your Park, a free travelling outdoor screening series that will reach 10 new park sites located in under-served communities like Neighborhood Improvement Areas.“TIFF is Toronto’s ‘home for film’,” says Carey, “and we’re so much more than just a downtown hotspot. We want to share the power of film with communities across the City.”
TIFF in Your Park is made possible through the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, Park People, and generous donors and members like you. Stay tuned to see if there’ll be a screening near you!
